Mandatory question (task)
The last question (task) is one of the most important ones. Ask the candidate to do the job using the software! It doesn't have to be anything special. You can ask them just to create a simple report, graph, chart or use one of the questions and ask the person to explain it using SSRS. It is usually very easy to spot how familiar is the person with the software and options/properties. SSRS Books I read and I can recommendI have read several books related to SSRS and I can recommend those two: For beginners: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services Step by Step For those who want to learn more: Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Recipes: for Designing Expert Reports (Wrox Programmer to Programmer)

Comment: Thank you for the article. We are about to interview for a new SSRS developer / data analyst. I realy like your comments on certification. Too many times I have seen candidates / hires with certifications who did not have basic competency with the software they have the certification in. Something I was exposed to during my last job search was this on-line testing system that asked a large variety of questions on a particular topic (SQL Server 2005 / 2008 Administration in my case). A couple of things about the system. 1) It allowed you to use any reference resource you wished, except another person, to come up with your answer. 2) You only had 3 minutes to answer any single question. 3) Most questions were based around the details of daily job functions. The system was designed in such a way that if the candidate really knew the material and had experience in the job function, they would have very little difficulty with the test. However, if someone had applied and only had minimal exposure to the software, ie. heard of it or seen it, then there is no way they could get through the exam with satisfactory results. I'm not sure of the name of the system, I think it was Brain Bench (??). Anyway, if you are looking for a reliable method to evaluate candidates, search for one of these systems.

Comment: Hi Scott, I'm glad to hear you found this blog post useful and I also like the kind of tests you mentioned especially if someones wants to test the knowledge in many ssrs aspects. Also for me MUST have is asking someone to do the job (sample reports) on the interview. This is usually under pressure and the candidate needs to show what is really needed for a particular role (something that tests might not give enough focus) and during the test and end result usually shows the technical competency but also quality of work, efficiency and very important candidate's behaviour/personality which I believe is as important as technical skills.

Comment: Regarding sites to learn SSRS. My personal preference are good books. Microsoft SSRS step by step is very good start. There is also one for advanced users (I don't remember the name but if you need let me know and I will check). I don't have sites for learning SSRS but usually video based are very good youtube or paid trainingspot.com which is one I use sometimes for subjects new to me.

Comment: I like this. Thank you for taking time to explain some of these stuff that are so needed in this field. That way, you become the answer to the cry of many. I have read Step by Step Reporting and find it to be very good. You talked about one advance SSRS book but never mentioned the name or author. I will be so glad if you can give the name so I can go for it. Thank you!

Hi Sam,
I'm glad to hear you don't like it. We all should have different experience and thoughts and it would be really boring if everyone agreed with everyone else.
The most important for me is to have a respect for other people's opinions :)

Thank you for all comments both positive and negative. I found some time to do a review of the page and I added new "narrowed" section with 20 new interview questions and improved a little bit structure of the page and created "list of questions" for questions only.
For details on some of the questions visit our SSRS tutorial
